OtterBox has produced a case for the “iPhone 4S”

Otterbox iPhone 4S

Okay, we know Apple is set to introduce the next iPhone on October 4, but a leak from a major iPhone case manufacturer seems to imply that we'll be seeing a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4, and that it'll be called the iPhone 4S. It's definitely not a typo, as the case itself has the volume buttons moved to the right side of the iPhone 4S, right above the SIM card slot. As we reported earlier today, Al Gore let it slip that Apple would be releasing new iPhones, plural, in October. Could we see both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S?

We've got a larger image of the case after the jump.

Apple set to reveal iPhone 5 on October 4

iPhone 5

If All Things D is to be believed (and they're a very trustworthy source,) Apple will be taking the stage on October 4th to introduce the iPhone 5 to the world. New Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to take the reigns for the event, likely with a familiar cast of Apple execs like Scott Forstall and Phil Schiller. The report claims that this is more than just an educated guess at a date, but rather this is a date that has been selected by Apple itself.

Along with an iPhone 5 announcement, we also expect details of a slightly redesigned and discounted iPhone 4, as well as details on where the iPod line is going next (as is typical for Apple Fall events.) So the wait will be another couple of weeks, but in the meantime you can tide yourselves over by reading through all the iPhone 5 rumors.

The first public photo taken with an iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 camera sushi

The picture of delicious-looking sushi that you see above may have been taken with an iPhone 5. PocketNow is reporting that the EXIF data from the image indicates that it was taken with an iPhone 4, however, prior to cropping, the image weighed in at almost 8 megapixels--much higher than the iPhone 4 limit of 5 megapixels. The iPhone 5 has been long-rumored to sport an 8 megapixel image.

This (very attractive) photo claims to have been taken by an iPhone 4, but the rest of its EXIF data tells a different story: although the image has been cropped to 2235x2291 (5.12 megapixels), the original picture was a much larger 3264x2448 -- or just shy of eight megapixels. What's more, the lens was recorded as a 4.3mm f/2.4, which is closer to that of a point-and-shoot than the iPhone 4's actual 3.85mm f/2.8.

The image has since been removed from Flickr, and it's been confirmed that it awas posted by an Apple iOS software engineer.

iPhone 5 coming to Sprint in October according to WSJ

iPhone 5 sprint

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint will be selling the iPhone 5 (alongside AT&T and Verizon) when it launches in "mid-October." In addition, they'll also sell the updated iPhone 4 model that Apple will be selling at a lower price (likely an 8 GB model.) This is great for Sprint and great for Apple, because if the report holds true, it'll give Sprint a much-needed shot in the arm to sell both the new iPhone model as well as the lower-cost iPhone 4. As for Apple, it gives them play on yet another American carrier, which means more marketshare. We'll be keeping our ears on this one, and will let you know what more we hear on this.

Video: How iOS 5 Notification Center should really perform

Have a look at the Notification Center overhaul that Jan-Michael Cart put together. iOS 5 and its Notification Center won't even be publicly available until the fall, and already this guy has made it look old and busted with his much-improved user interface. Kudos.

Verizon iPhone sales

Since its February debut, the Verizon version of the iPhone 4 has captured about 32 percent of the U.S. market, according to a Thursday report.

Analyzing U.S. iPhone 4 traffic, mobile app analytics firm Localytics found that summer has been kind to Verizon and the iPhone. The carrier's iPhone 4 share remained roughly the same throughout the spring, but saw growth in May and June.

The Verizon iPhone 4 launched on February 10 and in its first week, it captured 20 percent of the market, Localytics said. That increased to 22.4 percent in March, 24.9 percent in April, 25.9 percent in May, 28.7 percent in June, and 32.3 percent in July, the firm said in a blog post. Verizon does not offer earlier versions of the iPhone.
